The Mound City council met in regular session on Tuesday, April 4 and began their meeting with the public hearing for the Community Development Block Grant for new sidewalks. (See related article in this edition)

Following the public hearing, the council approved the minutes of the March meeting followed by approval of warrant checking in the amount of $72,300.21.

During public comment several residents from Locust Street were on hand to complain about dogs at large and how aggressive some of them are and to ask the city to please do something about them. Police Chief Paul McKee talked about fines and the council opted to add that to the agenda for the meeting.

Police Chief McKee stated they now have court dates set for the third Monday of each month at 9 a.m.

McKee further reported that as of June 1, the jail will be charging for inmates and asked council to increase court costs to help cover that expense. During a discussion later in the meeting, McKee stated he would like to see court costs raised to $105 and council agreed. A motion was made and carried setting court costs to that amount.

Codes Enforcement Officer Jake Bush reported the owner of one of the properties he is working on has taken ill and requested another 30 days for action.  Council agreed to 30 days and then the case moves forward to condemnation.

Council then discussed fines for dogs at large with McKee noting that dog fines are currently set at $15 for the first offense; $25 for the second; and $75 plus court costs for the third offense. Council approved increasing those fines to $50 for the first offense; $100 for the second offense; and $200 plus court costs for the third offense. Council agreed to purchase eight gift cards at $25 each and $200 in fishing poles as prizes for the fishing derby set for May 6.

Council then discussed a request for reduction of a water bill for Catherine Dominguez. Council agreed to a $151.20 credit and gave the customer 90 days to pay the remainder of the bill.

Council then entered into executive session for personnel matters for five minutes and following the session adjourned.
