Funeral services for Albert Benjamin Wurtz, 96, Eudora, were held on Dec. 20 at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Eudora Chapel, in Eudora. Burial with military honors followed at Eudora Cemetery. Albert passed away on Monday, Dec. 16, 2019, at his home.
Albert was born at home in Mound City on April 18, 1923, to Benjamin Franklin and Viola May (Brandt) Wurtz. He was one of 13 children and began working at a young age to help provide for the family.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and stationed at Fort Leavenworth. In February 1945 he received orders to go to Germany as a medic. He and his brother Willie went over on the same ship.
He married Rita Louisa Johnson on Dec. 1, 1945, in Mound City. She preceded him in death on July 30, 2007.
Survivors include his two sons, Edwin Wurtz, Hollister, Mo., and Larry C. Wurtz, De Soto; a daughter, Linda Holloway, Eudora; eight grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren; a brother, Lester Wurtz, Napa, Idaho; and two sisters, Lillie Mae Wurtz Jackson, Pleasanton, and Thelma Wurtz Thomas, Fort Scott.
