Donald Eugene Long, age 91 of La Cygne, Kan., passed away, Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, surrounded by family at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Don was born Aug. 24, 1931, the son of Donald L. and Edna (LaRosh) Long at Jingo, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Paul and Robert Long; two sisters, Carol Heald and Ruth York; and two grandchildren. 

He is survived by his wife Norma (Riley) Long; children Richard Long (Phyllis), Dennis Long (Evelyn), Rick Ratty (Trudi), Randy Ratty (Brenda), Stacy Longgood (John); 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Don graduated from La Cygne Rural High School after which he served in the Navy and was stationed in Washington state, Hawaii, and Japan before being honorably discharged on March 25, 1954.

Don worked as a draftsman for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline, a surveyor for Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining, and farmer; although, farming was more of a hobby than a job because he loved it so much. He also enjoyed fishing. Throughout his life, Don lived in La Cygne, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., with the last 50 years of his life being spent in La Cygne, serving on the city Planning and Zoning Commission for several years.

Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, January 13, 2023, at Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne, Kan. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to Grady's Kids or the La Cygne Food Pantry.
