James L. Mooney, age 65 died June 20, 2024 at his home in La Cygne, Kan. Jim was born on Nov. 16, 1958, in Independence, Mo., to Bobby and Barbara (Spendal) Mooney. Jim grew up in La Cygne, graduating from Prairie View High School in 1977.  In 1979, Jim went to Kansas Horseshoeing School in Girard, Kan., where he received his diploma. He did horseshoeing for a few years as a business and then for himself and friends and family. Jim loved horses and had several in his lifetime. He was especially fond of his Arabian horse, Amigo. 

He worked as a welder at Ruskins Manufacturing in Paola, Kan., from 1980-1984. After 1984, he worked for Junior Mooney building houses for several years. He worked for Midwest Woodworking in La Cygne for several years. He was self-employed for a number of years raising pigs. Jim worked with Gilliland Lawn Service for a period of time. He then worked at Family Center in Paola, Kan., for five years, before retiring earlier this year. Jim was a very talented carpenter and built furniture for himself and others in his spare time. He loved living the rural farm life, fishing and hunting. 

He was preceded in death by his parents. Jim is survived by his sister, Janet and husband, Randy; three nephews, Eric Reese, Brandon Reese and Joey Reese; a niece, Bri Sweat; four great-nephews, Colton, Cooper, Leo and Bobby; three great-nieces, Mackenzie, Jacy and Luna; and several aunts, uncles and friends.

A graveside service was held at 10:45 a.m., Monday, June 24, 2024, at the Oak Lawn Cemetery. Visitation was from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 24, 2024, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Memorials are suggested to ACARF Animal Rescue and may be sent in care of the Schneider Funeral Home P.O. Box 304 La Cygne, Kan. 66040. Online condolences may be left at www.schneiderfunerals.com
