Joe Junior Turpen, age 78, La Cygne, Kan., passed away on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021. He was born on March 13, 1943, in Linn County, Kan., the son of Joe and Dorothy Funk Turpen. He graduated from La Cygne Rural High School in the Class of 1961. He then attended Fort Scott Community College.  He was united in marriage to Phyllis LeRoy on July 30, 1970. He worked as Clerk of the Board for USD No. 362 for 25 years. Joe enjoyed KU basketball, the KC Royals, driving around La Cygne and attending his grandchildren’s activities. He served on the Lincoln Scott Township Board. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, LeRoy Turpen. Joe is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Scott Turpen (Jamie) and Bryan Turpen; three sisters, Kay DeMott, Linda Brambach and Diane VanWinkle; and three grandchildren, Laurel, Mason and Chase.  

Funeral service was scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021. Burial was to be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery. Visitation was scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Contributions are suggested to the Kidney Foundation, c/o Schneider Funeral Home, P.O.
