John Vernon Vanderpool, 85, of Independence, Kan., passed away Dec. 15. 2023, at Labette Health ER in Independence, Kan. John was born April 22, 1938, to Joseph Heron Vanderpool and Clarissa Elnora Lewis.

John married Dianna Fern Vanderpool on Jan. 1, 1957, together they had two sons Johnny and Tony, and a daughter Julie. Dianna passed away on Nov. 15, 2005.

On Oct. 14, 2007, John married Patricia Wuerdeman.

John was known as a loving and Christian man, building his life around God, his kids, and grandkids. He loved being outdoors, fishing, hunting, and camping. He was also a big gun lover, always fascinated with his gun collection and always looking to find the newest and nicest guns. Most of all John loved sharing those passions with his kids and grandkids. Watching his grandchildren run and play, and his children grow up always put the biggest smile on his face.

John is survived by his sons, Johnny Vanderpool and his wife, Teresa, and Tony Vanderpool, and a daughter, Julie Jackson and her husband, Travis; a brother, Bob Vanderpool; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his first wife, Dianna Fern Vanderpool; and his second wife, Patricia Vanderpool; a brother Joe Vanderpool; and a sister Bonnie Jean. 

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, Dec. 22, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home in Howard, Kan. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service.
