Mary Alice “Peggy” Garst was born June 20, 1925, and passed from this life on Jan. 18, 2019, peacefully in her home in Jonesboro, Ark. She was the youngest of four born to Bernice Jenkins White and Richard White in Chattanooga, Tenn.

She married Marion Lyle Garst, a World War II veteran, on Jan. 20, 1941. They were married 60 years when her husband passed in 2001.

She was a baptized member of Northside Christian Church, Jonesboro, and attended regularly. Miss Peggy was a nurse for over 40 years retiring at the age of 81.

She was a loving mother and although raised a city girl, she adapted to farm life when they moved to eastern Kansas. She loved the old hymns and ‘40s and ‘50s music, to grow houseplants, do needlework and have visitors.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Lyle, and her parents, one brother and two sisters.

She is survived by her four children, Richard (Gloria) Garst of Pinckard, Ala., Frances (Eldon) Richardson and Patricia Stauffer, all of Jonesboro, and Dale (Kathy) Garst of Coker Creek, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and 18 great, great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019, at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home. A celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home Chapel with Eldon Richardson and Marcus Johnson officiating. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Association or a charity of your choice.
