Mary Jane Abel, age 82, La Cygne, Kan., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at the Olathe Medical Center. She was born at Louisburg, Kan., on May 28, 1934, the daughter of Francis Marion Noel II and Mildred Laurine Trageser.
She graduated from La Cygne Rural High School in the Class of 1953. She then attended the Ursuline Academy in Paola, Kan. She continued her education receiving a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Pittsburg State University. She worked as a teacher in Olathe and La Cygne. She then spent the majority of her career at Miami R-1 in Amsterdam, Mo., before retirement.
Upon retirement, she volunteered as a “Foster Grandparent” in the Prairie View School District. She had a passion for children and their education.
Mary Jane was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in La Cygne.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Pauline Noel.
She is survived by her son, Michael Abel; brother Francis “Frankie” Noel III; two sisters, Patricia Noel and Lois Green; four grandchildren, Benjamin, Michael, Jacob and Ori; four great-grandchildren, Aria, Liam, Tucker and Sydney; and two special caregivers, Vickie Hall and Angie Coe.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in La Cygne. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, La Cygne. The rosary was prayed on Tuesday with visitation following at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel.
