Neal Edward Mathews, age 85, Fort Scott, Kan., formerly of Pleasanton, Kan., passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024.  He was born on Oct. 14, 1938, in Mound City, Kan., the son of William Chesley and Delilah Esther Whitson Mathews. He graduated from Mound City High School and attended NEO A&M in Miami, Okla. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Neal was united in marriage to Pat Bryan on May 22, 1959. She preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 2015.  He later married Virginia Smith Jackson. He worked as Postmaster at the Pleasanton Post Office for many years before retirement. He was a member of the Mound City First Baptist Church and the Lion’s Club. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. 

He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Allan, Joe, Harold, Thurman, and Richard; and three sisters, Virginia Wilson, Flossie Amick, and Esther Stanbrough. Neal is survived by his wife, Virginia Jackson-Mathews; a son, Ed Mathews and wife, Laura; a daughter, Kelly Cox and husband, Bill; a step-son, Jesse Jackson and wife, Sheila; a step-daughter, Jan Nolde and husband, Mike; five grandchildren, Kirstie, Colby, Ben, Lyndsey, and Zach; three step-grandchildren, Emilee, Levi, and Jake; seven great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. 

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2024, at the Mound City First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, July 4, 2024, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Baptist Church Youth Fund, c/o Schneider Funeral Home, P.O. Box 525, Pleasanton, KS 66075.
