Vanetta Carol (Hardy) Sabine passed away peacefully at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo., at 5:42 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023. She was born June 27, 1944, in Garnett, Kan., to William Orland and Ella Bernice “Margaret” (Walje) Hardy.

Vanetta grew up in Pleasanton, Kan., where she attended school until graduating in 1962. She went on to attend Kansas State College (now Pittsburg State University), where she received her degree in education in 1967. Her teaching career began in Fort Osage School District in Independence, Mo. She then returned home to Pleasanton to continue her career in 1971 until her retirement in 2007.  A career for over 40 years!

She loved Pleasanton, was very patriotic, and her hobbies included history, reading, music and antiques. Her greatest love was for Jesus Christ and his church, Liberty Worship Center, where she was a founding member.  A very close second was her love for her grandchildren, which she affectionately called her “Grands”.  Of all the titles, she held throughout her life, “Grammie” was by far her favorite.

Vanetta married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Eugene Sabine, on June 7, 1968, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He survives of the home in Girard, Kan. Additional survivors include her three sons and their wives, Jason and Jennifer Sabine, Pleasanton, Aaron and Misty Sabine, Girard, Kan., and Ethan and Monica Sabine, Pleasanton; a nephew she considered a son, Rolland “Skip” Saye (Terry); nine grandchildren: Steven Sabine, Megan Sabine, Matthew Sabine, Ella Sabine, Carol Sabine, Emma Byrd (Ryan), Alicia Sabine, Ashley Sabine, and Eryn Sabine; two great-grandchildren Ezra Hall and Nova Sabine; two brothers and their wives, Dennis and Charlyce “Kaye” Hardy and Gerald and Elna “Charlene” Hardy, both of Pleasanton; and a sister-in-law, Marietta Saye; five nieces and nephews Jennifer Statler (Anthony), Maggie Knox (Jason), Brian Hardy (Anna), Mary White (Matt), and Denny Hardy.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Ella “Margaret” Hardy, mother-in-law Mary Lee Wallace, and an aunt, Mary Frances Hardy.

A Celebration of Life will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. Burial will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Pleasanton Chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Shalom or Linn County Historical Society, c/o Schneider Funeral Home, P.O. Box 525, Pleasanton, Kan. 66075.
